Signs and Symptoms

What are the symptoms of Addison’s disease?

The symptoms of Addison’s disease are similar to those of more common diseases, some of the more noticeable signs of Addison’s disease are:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Weakness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Shivering, tremors and or muscle stiffness
  • Depression
  • Dehydration

How is Addison’s disease diagnosed?

Diagnosis is not always straight forward. It may take time to diagnose Addison’s disease as it is often mistaken for more common diseases with similar symptoms.

When your vet suspects Addison’s disease they will perform a physical examination and perform some blood tests to measure your dog’s sodium and potassium levels.

How do the adrenal glands become damaged?

The adrenal glands can become damaged as a result of a number of things:

  • Hereditary auto-immune disease
  • Tumours
  • Injury
  • Prescription drug side effects
  • Infection
  • Inflammation

Treatment

How long will my dog need to have treatment?

Your dog will require treatment for the rest of its life.  The damage to the adrenal glands cannot be reversed. Successful treatment with Zycortal will help manage the symptoms and enable your dog to live a normal and happy life.

What is Zycortal?

Zycortal is the only veterinary registered injectable in Europe for the treatment of Addison’s disease in dogs. Zycortal contains the active ingredient desoxycortone pivalate (DOCP) which replaces the missing aldosterone.

Why does my dog also need a daily tablet as well?

Zycortal replaces the missing aldosterone. Most dogs with Addison’s disease will also need a replacement for the missing cortisol; your dog will need to have a daily tablet to replace the cortisol.
